The Present

“And that’s what happened, just like I told you the first time you asked,” I said. The story sounded even nuttier to me the second time around. Or was it the third? Fucking zombies. “Can I have a smoke now?”

“In a moment,” the man said. “I do have one more question though.”

“Of course you do,” I said. Guys like this were always full of questions.

“Ben Goodwin.”

I shifted in my seat. This fella was good. “What about him?”

“You said it was the zombies that got to him.”

“That’s right. Orin was on him, biting him.”

“Except we’ve recovered his body and there were no bite marks. Someone, you, shot him in the back of the head, but nothing ever bit him. He never would’ve turned into one of the undead.”

“Imagine that,” I said. It was true. I lied about Ben. He was a woman beating bastard that didn’t deserve to live, not when so many others died. Reynaldo was a good man and he was gone, and that wasn’t fair. Ben didn’t deserve to live. He’d hurt Sarah and Lana. I did what I needed to do. Orin had a hold of him and would’ve bitten him eventually. I just sped things up by a couple of seconds. I worked for the fucking mafia, what do you expect? Good manners? I’m not an antihero, I’m a goddamned villain who did a few good things in his life.

“Yeah, imagine that,” he said.

“That gonna be a problem?” I asked.

The man shrugged. “Not a problem as far as I see. Ben was a casualty of the conflict.”

“Good. What about the other casualties of the conflict?”

“We’ve contained the outbreak, and once you get the all clear from our doctors, you are good to go.”

“Good to go? Just like that?” I said.

He nodded. “You will, of course, also receive reimbursement for your losses and for your discretion in this matter.”

“Discretion? You’ve got a town full of people who aren’t going to keep quiet,” I said.

“We’ve got our media resources spinning already. The chemical spill was certainly a tragedy. Wiped out most of the town.”

“Most of the town? How many survivors were there?” I said. I hadn’t seen Sarah or Lana in hours. If anything had happened to them after the government rolled in, I’d….

“Don’t worry,” the man said. “There were three survivors, including you. They are safe and as fine as can be expected given these circumstances.”

“You aren’t afraid of us talking?” I asked.

“No. Our psychiatrists are with them now, helping them start to come to terms with what happened.”

“How do you come to terms with zombies?”

“Memory repression, false memories and cash,” he said. “Sarah is a single mom who could use enough cash to give her little girl a good life. Our repression techniques have been quite successful in the past when other situations needed similar control too. We are very good at this.”

“Why don’t you just kill us?”

He frowned. “We’re not the monsters, contrary to what some might believe. We do want to help.”

“The government wants to help?”

“I never said we were part of the government.
